Rules for Electronic Payments: What Sunmark Members Need to Know

5/29/26

Members who receive direct deposits and/or electronic payments and transfers may be impacted by new rules implemented in 2026 by the National Automated Clearing House Association’s (NACHA).

NACHA is the organization that governs the Automated Clearing House (ACH) Network, the payment system that ensures secure and efficient direct deposits and electronic payments for United States banks and credit unions. The rules are intended to strengthen the accuracy and security of ACH transfers and help prevent fraud, reduce misdirected payments, and support safer electronic transactions.

For Sunmark Credit Union members, this means the name used on direct deposits, external transfers, and other ACH transactions should exactly match the name on the Sunmark Credit Union account. If the name does not match, the transaction may require additional review and could be delayed or returned while ownership is verified.

ACTIONS TO TAKE
• Review your Sunmark account information for accuracy. Be sure to update your mailing address, email, and phone number if needed.
• Confirm your name is correct on all ACH deposits and transfers.
• Make sure your employer, benefits provider, or other payment sender is using your current legal name exactly as it appears on your Sunmark Credit Union account.

How to Update Your Information
If you need to update your Sunmark Credit Union account information, please contact Sunmark via one of the following options:
• Visit a Sunmark Financial Center and have a team member update your information in person. Find your closest location here.
• Call the Member Solution Center at 866.SUNMARK, to speak with a Member Solution Specialist.
If you find that your name is incorrect on any incoming deposits or electronic payments, please contact the payment sender to update their records so future deposits and transfers use the same name shown on your Sunmark Credit Union account.
• Contact the sender and ask them to update your name in their payroll or payment system.
• Compare the sender’s record to your Sunmark account information before the next payment is sent.

• If you recently changed your name, update both your Sunmark account and the sender’s records as soon as possible.
Even small differences can create a mismatch that triggers review. Using your full legal name exactly as it appears on your Sunmark Credit Union account helps your ACH transactions process more smoothly.

Why is this important?
These safeguards are designed to protect members and the ACH network by helping prevent:
• Fraudulent deposits
• Identity theft
• IRS and regulatory issues caused by incorrect account ownership information
• Delays in accessing your funds due to verification problems

They also help keep accounts secure and support compliance with industry and regulatory expectations. Financial institutions must verify that deposits and transfers are going to the correct account holder. When names do not match, it may signal fraud, a misdirected payment, or an unauthorized transaction. To protect your money, Sunmark may need to review or return transactions that do not align with the account ownership information on file.

Taking a few minutes now to review and update your information can help prevent delays, avoid returned transactions, and keep your direct deposits and payments moving without interruption.
