Sunmark Supports Local Teachers with Classroom Supply Drive

Sunmark Credit Union and the Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation are celebrating the start of Summer of Kindness and end of the school year with initiatives at helping local teachers fulfill their classroom supply needs.

In May, the credit union partnered with News Channel 13 to sponsor their “Teacher Supply Surprise” contest. Held from May 12 – June 1, local elementary school teachers were nominated by members of the community for a chance to win a $250 gift card to help purchase classroom supplies for the upcoming school year. Thirteen winning teachers were selected and featured on News Channel 13, along with the chance to join the NewsChannel 13 Today morning team for a group shopping event.

According to information provided by the National Education Association website, over 90% of teachers subsidize classroom supplies with out-of-pocket expenses averaging between $500 - $750. In underfunded schools, that cost will often surge as educators strive to meet basic needs conducive to learning environments, purchasing essentials like fans, snacks, and cleaning products.

To further help alleviate the financial burden that’s often placed on educators to stock their classrooms with necessary supplies, Sunmark Credit Union will continue its support of teachers by hosting a School Supply Drive to help collect classroom supplies. Beginning June 2 and running through July 27, donation bins will be available at Sunmark financial centers within the Capital Region and Hudson to collect classroom necessities such as:

· Cleaning/hygiene products: tissues, Lysol wipes, paper towels, liquid hand soap

· Writing supplies: #2 Pencils, highlighters, block and cap erasers, black permanent markers, dry erase markers, pens

· General needs: 3 ring binders, folders, composition notebooks, wide-ruled loose-leaf paper, glue sticks

· Art supplies: watercolor paint sets, 24 set crayon boxes, colored pencils, markers

This School Supply Drive will kick-off the Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation’s first Summer of Kindness project for 2025, with more Kindness Projects to follow throughout the months of July and August. For more information and a complete supply list, visit sunmark.org/teachersupply.

The Summer of Kindness campaign began in 2021, encouraging children up to age 12 to “deposit kindness” by submitting ideas on how they would spread kindness in their community. The Foundation will continue to collect ideas to be carried out by Foundation volunteers again this year.
