Working From Home: Tips for the First Timer

For the millions of Americans who were already telecommuting, work-life doesn’t look much different than it did five months ago. However, many of us are experiencing significant adjustments as the Coronavirus disrupts the way we work, at least for now.

Those fortunate enough to have a “work from home” choice during this time may find that the comfort of staying in pajamas all day is overshadowed by struggles to stay productive. Sharing space with a family member or pile of laundry along with other added distractions may make it harder for those of us new to telecommuting to stay focused and relaxed.

If you are one of the millions of Americans working from home today and finding it hard to tune out the world and tune in your work, there are practical ways to set yourself up for success while working from home.

1. Create a dedicated workspace.

Whether it’s a separate office space or living room couch, make sure your space is free of household chores or other distractions. It’s much easier to focus on your professional work when your “home” work isn’t staring you in the face.

2. Stay on task by staying away from personal tasks.

Resist the temptation to tackle personal tasks while you’re trying to focus on work related tasks. If needed, set aside dedicated time to tend to personal or family needs.

3. Turn off the TV.

With everything happening in the world today, it’s hard to not want to stay informed. However, the television will prove to be a tempting distraction and the news will be sure to add more stress to what is likely an already stressful situation.

4 Tune out the noise.

If you cannot eliminate noise distractions, try playing white noise or instrumental music to help drown out the other sounds around you. Noise-canceling headphones are another approach for people who feel safe using them and need a more impactful solution to external sounds.

5. Turn on the light.

Research has proven that lighting can have a direct impact on mood. While natural daylight is most effective, some homes just don’t have enough windows. Turn on artificial lights and when possible try to choose cooler, blue lights to help feel more alert and focused.

6. Reset and recharge.

It’s important to take breaks, that’s why your company requires them. Whether it’s some fresh air, meditation, or throwing the ball for your dog, taking much-needed breaks will help you stay productive longer.

7. Stick to a schedule.

Set a daily work schedule to create structure and keep a clear work-life balance. When little ones are at home with you, that is likely a lot harder to attain and you may need to reframe what “normal” working hours look like.

8. Socialize.

Facetime or Skype co-workers. Social contact that normally comes from working in the office will be lacking. Especially if you’re alone in your new home “office”, daily calls with a friend or co-worker can help reduce the loneliness that comes with working remotely.

9. Change your mindset.

Remember to think positively and reframe any negative thoughts. Instead of saying “I have to work at home”, change it to “I get to work at home where I’m safe”. You’re doing your part to help flatten the curve, be proud of yourself!

10. Have fun.

Participate in social media trends like sharing a photo of your new office or rebrand family and pets as “co-workers”. Play mood-lifting music while you work, sing along and maybe even dance a bit.

Bonus tip: do what works best for you and your lifestyle. If you have kids or are caring for others in your home, think outside of the box to come up with ideas that work with your lifestyle, not against it. Some people need dedicated workspace or schedules to stay productive, while others do their best work from the couch in the evening. Being productive while working from home is all about reducing stress, minimizing distractions and remembering to take care of your physical and mental health.
