What to Buy (and Skip) in June 2022

From scooping up swimwear to saving money on Father’s Day gifts, here’s what you should buy — and a few things you should hold off on — while shopping in the month of June.

Buy: Swimwear and lingerie

Add swimwear and lingerie to your “to buy” list. Why? Retailers typically discount swimsuits just before the weather heats up. Additionally, Victoria’s Secret is known to offer savings on bras and panties in June.

In the past, Victoria’s Secret customers snapped up savings of up to 60% off almost 2,000 styles in the store’s twice-annual sale.

Skip: Grills

Summer officially starts in June, which means many people have grilling on their minds. This higher demand means higher prices. If you can get by without hosting a barbecue in June, wait for prices to cool off later in the summer. As with most other timely purchases, the further into the season you go, the more you’ll save.

Buy: Father’s Day gifts

Father’s Day is June 19 this year. Deals are usually common at places such as The Home Depot, Harbor Freight Tools and Dick’s Sporting Goods. You may also find discounts for dad at online retailers that offer more bespoke gear. Last year, Solo Stove discounted its popular fire pits by 25%. Talk about a hero purchase for pops! Many of these sales will happen in the days leading up to the holiday, so in this case, it can pay to procrastinate.

TIP: June is a month that’d make Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor grunt. That’s because power tool staples like cordless drills, string trimmers and pressure washers often go on sale, according to Consumer Reports. All make great gifts for the guy in your life who never says "less power, please."tip: June is a month that’d make Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor grunt. Skip: Brand-name clothing

If you’re a fan of designer clothes, shoes and purses, you’ll want to wait another month before overhauling your wardrobe.

Designer clothing sales are typically great in July, in large part due to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. During this high-end department store’s once-a-year sale, shoppers can save hundreds of dollars on top brands. In the past, the store has discounted items from labels such as Tory Burch and Marc Jacobs. This year’s sale opens to everyone on July 15, but you can preview the deals on June 29.

Shop now: Semiannual sales

Victoria’s Secret isn’t the only store with a semiannual sale. Since June is the halfway point of the year, many retailers celebrate with the second installment of their twice-yearly sales (the first happens in January).

Keep an eye out for these offers throughout the month. In past years, we’ve seen stores like Bath & Body Works and Brooks Brothers hold semiannual sales in June.

Wait for: Amazon Prime Day

If you can, keep your Amazon app closed for the month of June. That’s because the retail giant announced that its annual Prime Day sale would return to July this year (Prime Day was in June last year). The exact date is TBA, but you know you can expect great deals on Amazon’s own line of Echo electronics and a host more items from big brands and small businesses alike. Be sure to keep some cold bottles of water on hand for the delivery drivers working overtime.

Bonus: Freebies

Father’s Day and the first day of summer are always June highlights, but there are some lesser-known occasions during the month as well. Mark your calendar for the following days, which could offer discounts or freebies: National Doughnut Day on June 3 (always the first Friday in June) and National Sunglasses Day on June 27.
