Summer of Kindness Project 3: Helmets for Kids
Earlier this year, three first-grade classmates noticed some of their friends riding bikes and scooters without helmets. Wanting to keep them safe, Thomas, Lilah, and Audrina submitted a kindness form to Sunmark Credit Union and Beekman 1802 asking for help. Their idea was to spread kindness this summer by providing free helmets to children.
The Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation and Beekman 1802 were able to help Thomas, Lilah and Audrina fulfill their mission on Tuesday, July 20 with a Summer of Kindness project. The classmates joined the Kindness Crew at Riverside Park in Rensselaer to participate in the Rensselaer City Police Department’s Bike Rodeo. The children spread kindness throughout the event by handing out free bike helmets to anyone who needed one – a generous deed that will now help over 20 children stay protected when they’re riding their bikes, skateboards, or scooters.
The Bike Rodeo event was free and open to the community, and also featured a safety course hosted by the police department to teach children what to look out for while riding their bikes, helmet safety checks, and free bicycle safety checks by FreeWheel.

The Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation and Beekman 1802 are inviting children to “deposit kindness” by submitting their ideas on how they would spread kindness where they live. Kindness forms are available at any Sunmark Credit Union location, or online at www.sunmark.org/kindness. Children are invited to deposit their ideas into the Beekman 1802 goat banks located at any Sunmark branch, or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
