Hatsgiving at Sunmark to Support Pediatric Cancer Patients

Hatsgiving returns to Sunmark October 26 - November 23. All Sunmark friends and members are encouraged to drop off new, soft, winter hats (purchased or handmade) to the Hatsgiving drop-off locations inside Sunmark branch locations or consider making a monetary, tax-deductible donation.

This concept for the Hatsgiving project was created in 2012 by Jeremy Wernick, who had just turned eight years old. That was the second year he chose to shave his head to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research. As he braved the bald to coincide with his birthday in late fall, he realized it's a cold time of year to be without hair. Jeremy started thinking about kids who undergo chemotherapy during the colder months, so he developed the idea of Hatsgiving

The first official collection was held in 2013 and Hatsgiving had only one collection site. 226 hats were distributed to children undergoing cancer treatment at The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center. In 2014, Hatsgiving had partnered with more locations, including Sunmark, to help with collection. Donations increased by almost 1,000 hats and today Hatsgiving continues to grow. In addition to Albany Medical Center, thanks to the many generous donations, Hatsgiving has distributed hats to 60 treatment centers in 43 states plus Washington DC.

Hatsgiving donations will be accepted during the last week of October and continue through Thanksgiving.  All Sunmark friends and members are encouraged to drop off new, soft, winter hats (purchased or handmade) to the Hatsgiving drop-off locations inside Sunmark branch locatrions. The hats collected will be donated to pediatric cancer treatment centers around the country. Since children of all ages may be diagnosed with cancer, donated hats may be newborn to adult size to fit the tiniest patients up to teens. If you're not leaving the house as much this year, but still want to help, please consider making a monetary, tax-deductible, donation. Donations help cover our shipping costs.
